We are now seeking expression of interest for the position of Technician – Geotechnical for a FIFO position based at our Lihir Gold Operation (LGO).

Reporting to the Geotechnical System’s Specialist, you are required to collect geotechnical slope monitoring data to ensure that the data is reliable and timely available for reporting to the Geotechnical Engineers to undertake installation and maintenance of the slope monitoring systems to specified standards.

The role will have responsibility to:

  • Maintain a work group culture of continuous improvement in safety and environment practices.
  • Ensure personal and team compliance with all HSE requirements & policies including Fitness for Work.
  • Works Constructively within a diverse group of people.
  • Delivers consistently on commitments and takes accountability for own development.
  • Data Collection and Reporting – Undertake daily data collection tasks as directed by the Geotechnical Supervisor and/or Geotechnical Engineer in line with the monitoring schedule.
  • Ensure all field data collected is entered in the Monitoring database and other relevant spreadsheets in a timely manner.
  • Maintenance – Maintain all existing slope monitoring systems and alarms as per their relevant SOP’s and in line with the preventative maintenance schedule.
  • Instrument Installation – Ensure Geotechnical Instruments are installed as specified by instructions from Senior Geotechnical Officers.
  • Assist Geotechnical Monitoring Systems Specialist in trouble shooting Critical monitoring instrument for critical monitoring.
  • Assists in developing design drawings and specifications for geotechnical monitoring projects.

Essential criteria

Ideally, our preferred applicant will have;

  • A minimum of grade 12 qualification and appropriated technical school certificate is required.
  • Tertiary bachelor’s degree in applied physics, communication and computer science or instrumentation is essential.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in open pit metalliferous mining, with a strong knowledge of managing ground control management programs and geotechnical data collection.
  • High degree of competency in MS applications
  • Good reporting and presentation skills
  • Detailed knowledge of specialist slope monitoring systems and tools
  • Proficient in English with excellent verbal, written communication, and public speaking skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure and autonomously.
  • Excellent attention to detail and time management skills to meet deadlines.
  • Strong active listening & interpersonal skills for rapport building, conflict resolution & training.

The Requirements

  • Must be available for FIFO to Lihir
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment medical assessment.
  • Must have proof of a completed Police Clearance within the last six months.
