Lihir Operation is a tier-one open cut mining operation based on Aniolam island, in the Lihir Group of Islands, located in New Ireland Province approximately 800km north of Port Moresby. It is one of the world’s largest producing gold mines and is located on a geothermally active extinct volcanic crater. Production first commenced in 1997. The operation consists of an open pit mine producing refractory ore, which is treated using pressure oxidation before the gold is recovered by a conventional leach process.
About this Role
Reporting to the Senior Specialist – Fleet Engineering this role will add value by providing technical support and guidance in the application of reliability engineering principles and methodologies. You will be key to promoting cost-effective maintenance practices and predictable equipment performance and availability.
As part of the Mobile Fleet Maintenance team, you will be also responsible for the maintenance downtime analysis and performance improvement implementation to ensure compliance with current best practices.
As an expatriate, you will play a critical role in the ongoing development of the team, in support of Newmont’s commitment to developing our national and local workforce.
Your role will consist of:
- Develop and review maintenance strategies to ensure compliance with current best practice
- Ensure data integrity and accuracy to support high quality analysis and communication reports
- Proactively lead innovative continuous improvement projects

- Engage and collaborate with the Maintenance and Operations team in reliability improvement processes
- Actively seek cost reduction opportunities and identifies & reports any cost wastage
- Lead root cause investigations
- Develop Engineers and Graduates through coaching, mentoring and feedback
- Drives and influence proactive safety behaviours
Your training, skills and experience checklist
Here is what we would need so see from you!
- Proven experience in a similar role in large scale mining operations or heavy industry
- Proven Supervisory experience in developing, coaching and training team members
- Trade Qualification with demonstrated engineering capabilities (Diesel Fitting preferred) or Tertiary Qualifications in Mechanical Engineering
- Relevant experience in heavy field equipment maintenance including CAT (6060, 6050, 6020) Hitachi (EX2600, 1200), Epiroc Drills (D65s, D55s, PV231, PV271s), dewatering pumps and Marine Barges
- Experience in fault finding, maintaining diesel engines, maintenance downtime analysis, performance improvement implementation
- Demonstrated experience and ability to establish and continuous improvement maintenance strategies
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience with Root Cause Analysis Investigations, Failure Analysis and Reporting
- Comprehensive knowledge heavy machinery failure modes
- Demonstrated experience and exposure to working with a highly diverse work force
- Self-motivated with the ability to work autonomously
- High attention to detail
- Strong active listening & interpersonal skills for rapport building
- Be able to work a FIFO roster in PNG
- Ability to complete a pre-employment medical assessment
- Must be able to complete a National Police Check & Navex Risk Rate Screening
- Ability to satisfy all requirements for PNG Work Permit and Visa
Working conditions and location
This role is offered on a 22:20 Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster from Australia to Lihir Island.
Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi.
