We are currently seeking a Technical Services Superintendent to join our team. This is a permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng/ Rabaul/ Port Moresby/ Lae/ Mt Hagen/ Buka/ Madang/ Goroka/ Alotau/ Wapenamanda/ Popondetta/ Hoskins or Tabar group of Islands. (Locals are encouraged to apply).
Reporting to the Manager Technical Services.
To perform the functions of a Technical Services Superintendent, to lead the Mine Technical Services team in providing mining engineering, geotechnical, survey, production tracking and scheduling support, so as to achieve the production, safely and budget objectives of the Department. This is to be done in a manner consistent with the Company Vision and Values.
The opportunity
Technical accountabilities
- Be a safety leader within the department and operations in general. Lead by example and be a champion of safety culture.
- Ensuring safe work practices, own health and safety and all other workers by identifying hazards and ensuring issues and risks are reported and addressed.
- Carrying out Risk Assessment exercises and take part in tool box talks as appropriate.
- Ensuring currency and compliance with all safe work systems and procedures.
- Supervision and mentoring of the Mining Engineering and Survey teams.
- Aid in the development of open pit optimisations to be used as a basis for life of mine planning.
- Assist in the development of strategic life of mine plans.
- Preparation and delivery of Budget and quarterly forecasts schedules.
- Act as delegate for Manager Technical Services when required.
- Seeking operational cost saving opportunities as part of the mine planning process.
- Implementation and development of long, medium and short term plans.
- Development of cost models, evaluations, annual budgets and forecasts.
- Design, Optimisation, and support for the drill and blast function on site.
- Support the mining operations team to meet production targets.
- Evaluation, assessment and management of mining related projects as directed by the Manager Technical Services.
- Development and implementation of processes to improve the performance of the mining department.
- Technical support for mining department.
- Project work as required.
Scheduling accountabilities
- Managing effective use of available resources, including own time, in support of the delivery of the team/crew.
- Ensuring that the Technical Services function develops and uses effective plans that derive from the support the Technical Services Department and Simberi Operations plans.
People accountabilities
- Contributing to the development of capability within the team/crew.
- Contributing to an effective team/crew.
- Ensuring own work performance meets all role requirements; and taking appropriate professional development actions.
- Ensuring outputs and development of the team/crew.

We would love to hear from you if you have:
Essential
- Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
- Current unencumbered Drivers License
- At Least 10 years experience in technical services roles in the mining industry, including appropriate experience in supervisory roles.
- Strong ability to lead and work effectively with people
- High level of enthusiasm for the work with high performance goals for self and team
- Strong Interpersonal, influencing and communicating skills
- Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent
- Have a minimum of 10 years mining engineering experience mainly in operating mines
- Holder of a PNG Mine Manager Certificate of Competency of eligible to obtain one
- An excellent working knowledge of mine design, planning, scheduling, drill and blast, geotechnical, load and haul etc.
- An excellent working knowledge of mine optimisation, design, planning and scheduling software such as Deswik, Datamine, Whittle or their equivalents
- Proven success as a minimum senior mining engineer level in a challenging environment especially in developing countries
- Strong evaluation/decision making skills
- Undergo and satisfactorily pass Company medial examination
Desirable
- Previous experience on Superintendent level
